A woman was arrested after endangering three children by making them live in deplorable conditions.
The police responded to a home in Military Street after someone reported that three children ages 2, 4, and 5 were left outside unsupervised for a long time.
When police arrived, they found three three discarded mattresses. They had fecal matter, dirty stains, cockroaches, and bedbugs. Also, one officer said a foul smell from the home was detectable from the front yard. Moreover, they found a refrigerator with several dead cockroaches. The mother, Sarah Herald, said that she tried to spray them away, but it didn’t work. She also admitted to feeding her children Pop-tarts because no other food is safe to eat.
Consequently, child protective services placed the children with other family members.
Herald was charged with endangering the welfare of a minor and second-degree criminal abuse. She was detained in the Scott County Detention Center.
